A quiet apartment in Hyde Park
September 15, 2020

Not every field note is a mountain. This one is a corner of a Hyde Park apartment from my college years: a digital piano wedged against the wall, three floating shelves, a fan, a lamp, someone reading on the couch just out of frame.
I like it more than some of the grander photos. There was nothing to it — no view, no altitude, no story worth telling a stranger — and that was exactly the point. Cheap furniture, warm light, an hour to practice scales before bed. Simple vibes.
It’s easy to chase the dramatic version of a life and forget that most of the good part looks like this: a small room, a few things you own outright, and enough quiet to hear yourself think. I’ve tried to keep some of that ever since.
